The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

We present a test for partners in committed relationships who appreciate the horror genre: Sit down with your partner and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. At first glance, it might appear like typical biological terror, but inside Together lies a profound meditation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have remained a couple for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a special spark to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The narrative begins when Millie and Tim relocate from the urban environment to the countryside for professional reasons. A familiar story element, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions conclude. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the two tumble into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the couple. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The whole movie is a methodically building fright fest, weaving in elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) physical transformations, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes during something horrific). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and far away from his network of friends. He fears the concept of totally forfeiting his individual identity in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the sort of issues that are inherent in most partnerships over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their future together.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory never feels overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights serve the other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a powerful case for staying single. Meanwhile, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your partner and utter, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
