RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of approach shafts down to the facility... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - established extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," Healey added. "Including them were thousands of British troops stationed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate militants who threaten our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an assault killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
